The Norfolk and Western Railway (N&W) was a prominent American railroad that operated from 1838 to 1982. It originated as a short line connecting Petersburg and City Point, Virginia, and later expanded through mergers and acquisitions to serve 16 states and two Canadian provinces. It was headquartered in Roanoke, Virginia, and had a motto of “Precision Transportation”. It was known as “King Coal” for its dominance in the coal industry, and also for building its own steam locomotives and hopper cars at its Roanoke Shops. It was the last major Class I railroad to use steam power, which it retired in 1960. In 1982, it merged with Southern Railway to form Norfolk Southern Corporation, a leading freight transportation company in North America.
