The New York Central Railroad was one of the major American railroads that connected the East Coast with the interior. It was founded in 1853 by consolidating 10 small railroads that paralleled the Erie Canal between Albany and Buffalo. The railroad expanded its network by acquiring or merging with other lines, such as the Lake Shore and Michigan Southern Railway, the Michigan Central Railroad, and the New York, West Shore, and Buffalo Railroad. The New York Central Railroad served important cities such as New York, Boston, Montreal, Chicago, and St. Louis. It faced financial difficulties after World War II and eventually merged with its rival, the Pennsylvania Railroad, to form the Penn Central Transportation Company in 1968. The Penn Central went bankrupt in 1970 and its assets were transferred to Conrail and Amtrak in the 1970s.
