The Great Northern Railroad Sign (GNR) was one of the major British railway companies that operated in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. It was known for its fast and efficient passenger service, as well as its distinctive apple green locomotive livery with brown or black frames. One of the most famous GNR locomotives was the Class A1 1470 Great Northern, which was built by the GNR at Doncaster Works in 1922. It was a powerful and elegant 4-6-2 Pacific type engine, designed by Nigel Gresley, that could reach speeds of over 100 mph. It was painted in GNR apple green with brown framing, and later in LNER lined apple green with black framing after the GNR became part of the London and North Eastern Railway (LNER) in 1923. The Great Northern was one of the first LNER locomotives to be fitted with a corridor tender, which allowed crew changes without stopping the train. It was also one of the few LNER locomotives to retain its original name and number throughout its service life. The Great Northern pulled some of the most prestigious trains on the East Coast Main Line, such as the Flying Scotsman and the Coronation. It was withdrawn from service in 1947 and scrapped in 1950.
